A water fire extinguisher is an excellent choice for extinguishing Class A fires, which are fuelled by ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, and plastic. This effectiveness is primarily due to the way water interacts with the fire tetrahedron, which represents the four elements required for fire: fuel, heat, oxygen, and the chemical reaction that sustains combustion.
Water extinguishers work by tackling two sides of the fire tetrahedron: heat and the chemical reaction. Firstly, water has a high heat capacity, meaning it can absorb a significant amount of heat.
When applied to a fire, water absorbs heat from the burning material, reducing the temperature below the ignition point and effectively removing the heat element of the fire tetrahedron.
Secondly, when water is sprayed onto a fire, it vaporises and expands, displacing oxygen near the fire. This reduction in oxygen concentration at the combustion site impedes the chemical reaction that sustains the fire, further contributing to controlling and even extinguishing a fire.
